AS/NZS 1554 Welding Standards and Welder Qualifications.

Every structural weld on an 8 Star fabrication is carried out by Australian-trade-qualified welders, working to AS/NZS 1554.1 requirements. Visually inspected, with NDT available where the engineer specifies it — and a handover pack ready for your structural certifier.

AS/NZS 1554 Welding Standards We Work To

Five Australian standards inform structural steel welding on Melbourne projects. We work to all of them — and reference them in the handover pack so your engineer and building certifier have what they need.

Standard
Scope
Where It Applies
AS/NZS 1554.1Structural Welding — Steel
Welding of structural steel members — beams, columns, plates, hollow sections. Defines weld categories (SP, GP) and inspection.
All primary structural welds on our fabrications
AS/NZS 1554.3Welding of Reinforcing Steel
Welding of reinforcement bar to plate or other reo — applies where steel embeds into concrete or connects to post-tensioned reinforcement.
Embedded plates, starter bars, slab connections
AS/NZS 1554.5Cyclic Loading Welding
Welding of structures subject to high-cycle fatigue — referenced for crane runway beams, gantry supports, structures with vibration loading.
Crane gantries, fatigue-loaded structures
AS/NZS 5131Fabrication Category
Construction Category 2 (CC2) by default — covers welding quality, inspection levels and documentation rigour for commercial structural fabrication.
All fabricated structural steel packages
AS 4100Steel Structures
Engineer-side design reference — sets the structural requirements that our welding compliance feeds back into. We work to designs sized to AS 4100.
All engineer-designed structural drawings

Welder Qualifications and Trade Certifications

Every structural weld on an 8 Star fabrication is carried out by an Australian-trade-qualified welder. Our trade certifications are held on file and available for review on request.

Trade Certification

Australian apprenticeship completion certificate — formal documentation of the multi-year trade training pathway behind every welder on the shop floor.

SP and GP Welding Grades for Structural Steel

AS/NZS 1554.1 splits structural welds into two categories — SP (Structural Purpose) and GP (General Purpose). We default to SP-grade for primary load-carrying welds. GP is used only where the engineer explicitly nominates it on the drawings.

SP

Structural Purpose

Our default for all primary structural welds

  • Used on all primary load-carrying members — beams, columns, transfer girders
  • Higher inspection level — visual on primary welds, NDT where engineer-specified
  • Tighter weld profile and toe-condition acceptance criteria
  • Welders trade-qualified for structural fabrication (MEM30305 or equivalent)
  • Default for commercial, industrial and architectural structural packages

GP

General Purpose

Engineer-nominated only, never default

  • Used only where engineer explicitly nominates GP on the drawings
  • Typical applications — non-structural framing, cleats, secondary trim
  • Lower inspection level (visual sampling rather than 100%)
  • Still requires welder competency and AS/NZS 1554.1 procedure compliance
  • Not used on primary structural connections without engineer sign-off

Weld Inspection and Quality Sign-off Process

Four inspection stages — every weld passes through them before the steelwork leaves the shop. Hold-point sign-offs are recorded against the job and handed over with the documentation pack.

01

Welder Self-Check

Welder visually inspects the weld immediately after laying it down. Cracks, undercuts, porosity and incomplete fusion called out and re-worked at the bench.

Real-time

02

Workshop Visual Inspection

Workshop-side visual inspection — primary structural welds checked against AS/NZS 1554.1 visual acceptance criteria before paint or galvanising.

Workshop QA

03

NDT Where Specified

Ultrasonic (UT) or magnetic particle (MT) testing carried out by an external NDT operator where the engineer nominates it — typically on full-penetration butt welds.

External NDT

04

Workshop Sign-off & Records

Final sign-off at workshop dispatch. Inspection notes and welder details recorded against the job and bundled into the handover pack for your engineer.

Recorded

Welding Documentation We Hand Over at Sign-off

Engineers and certifiers ask for the same set of records. We hand them over as a single pack at install sign-off — no chasing follow-up requests after handover.

Welder & Standards References

  • Trade certifications on file (MEM30305 or equivalent)
  • Welding standards referenced for the job (AS/NZS 1554.1, etc.)
  • Welder details recorded against the project
  • Workshop work order showing the weld scope
  • Records available for engineer or certifier review

Inspection & Quality Records

  • Visual inspection notes for primary structural welds
  • NDT reports where engineer-specified (external NDT operator)
  • Workshop sign-off captured at dispatch
  • Mill certificates for the parent steel
  • Documentation cross-referenced to the engineer's drawings
